Various Variantes.

"Variantes" are a large family. These Horten wings, developed by Gérard Jumelin and Jean-Yves Martin, JMP-Team members, in fact exist under many versions (and this is not the end yet...). Today we have :

All these versions are described with details and a pull-out full size plan in the Aérotech magazine (Issue N°1 - July / August 2003). Unfortunately, this magazine is no longer published. However the Variante 50 has been also described in the September 2005 issue of Model Airplane News (US) and the Variante 50 plan is available for free download on the MAN site ( http://www.modelairplanenews.com/click_trips/sep05/variante.asp ).

Only Variantes 50 and 60 are within the "less than 50 gram" range. Variante 50 flies outdoor very well (even with some wind) and Variante 60 flies indoor as well as outdoor.

A variant of Variante.

During spring 2004, it was hatched a whole family of ...swifts (a bird almost like a swallow but with narrower wings and shorter tail) ! You have the black swift (Apus Apus) and the Alpine swift (Apus Melba) with a white belly. The first one, in its 6 mm Depron version, weighs 22,5 grams and has a wingspan of 42 cm (photo below). The other one weighs 30 grams, has a 52 cm wingspan and is powered by a geared KP00 motor (as Variante) and a GWS 3''x3'' propeller (1 Li-po 145 mAh cell). See them in flight (cf. videos below) !

Based on the same principle as the Variantes (Horten wing), it is the latest delirium of the JMP team !

The "Martinets" (French word for swift) left their nest for the first time on June, 19th 2004 at the ElecTrophy meeting (Boissy-sous-St Yon - 91 - France). Next they showed up at Ostracht (Interex meeting on September, 4th & 5th 2004 in Germany) and then, leaving the good old Europe, they made a big transatlantic migration towards the NEAT 2004 meeting (USA).

NEAT 2004 : Jean-Marie (Mister JMP) releases a Martinet just before the flooding ... A swallow does not make a summer !

INTER-EX 2004 : This bird is delicious, isn't it Gerard ?

Good news !

The Martinets are described with all details and a pull-out full size plan in the French magazine "Passion'Ailes", issue #7 (December 2004).

Update : Bad news ! Unfortunately, this magazine is no longer published
